Butokokan Judo
A brief history of Butokokan Judo Club
Butokokan Judo is a family based judo club, ran by a father, Michael Douglass, son, Andrew Douglass & daughter-in-law, Rachael Douglass in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Ashington. Together, we teach the art of Judo to students, aged 5 onwards, including senior students.
Butokokan Judo was founded on 18th June 2011, and have now seen 7 years of success, with many more to come. We started at Newbiggin Sports Centre, with one session a week, Saturday 12-1.30. When the club started to expand further in January 2013 we added another session on a Tuesday evening, 6-7pm. In September 2013 we added an extra 2 sessions a week in Ashington, on Monday and Friday evenings, 6-7pm. The club has now been successfully running on the same basis since then.
Judoka regularly return and improve upon their judo technical and competative abilities, demonstrating this well in our gradings. As a club we try to put on as many events as possible, including competitions, courses, and Masterclasses with well known, successful Judoka (notably Team GB's Ashley McKenzie (Two Time Olympian), Frazer Chamberlain (Multi European Medal Winner) & Owen Livesey (Commonwealth Champion), Team France's Automn Pavia (Two Time Olympian 2016 and 2012 (Olympic Bronze in 2012), and a visit from Team USA's Kayla Harrison (Two Time Olympic Champion). We hope to be able to bring top players to the area to conduct Masterclass sessions as judoka take a lot away from players, who have used what they teach successfully on a regular basis.
We regularly attend area, regional and national competitions with our judoka and encourage participation in these events, but we also recognise that contest is not for everyone so focus on technical aspects of throws, hold downs and grip work for beginners, advancing to arm locks, chokes, counters and combinations for more experienced judoka.
